12 Year old Catches 12lb Carp!!

I received a very nice email from one of our juniors the other day telling me about a fishing trip to Decoy. This is also incidentally, the current runner for the Junior Pead Carp Cup.

I thought he could tell the story himself..

"Hi Hassocks,
A few weeks ago me, Adrian (my Dad), Josephine (my Sister), Oliver (my brother) and a few of my Dads friend went to Decoy. At the beginning I was float fishing and catching some tiddlers, once I got bored of that, I decided to Ledger, for about the first hour, I caught nothing, but then, all of a sudden, the rod went crazy and I realized I had a bite, I struck and it took me about 5 minutes to get it in. Once we had taken the hook out, we saw that it was a Common Carp of 3 and 1/2 lb. It went quiet for about 10 minutes and we were about to go home when, I got another bite, once again I struck and it felt incredibly big, it was a struggle to actually hold the rod up it was so strong! after 15 minutes or so of fighting the Carp, I got it close enough for the landing net, my Dad got it in the net, and I found out it was a 12lb common Carp! My BIGGEST ever fish! I was really pleased and just after that we left, and when home. The next day my Dads friend phoned us and said, in the swim were were in he had caught 10 carp!
This was one of my funnest fishing days ever and I hope that these pictures will be able to go on the website! Gabes

New Eel Record

Its captor, Lee Chatfield caught it from Wildings in July and it was witnessed and weighed at 3lbs 13oz 8 drams making it a new record not only for the venue but for the club. Keepnets.

We all like to see the results of a days catch when pleasure fishing but with the onset of the Summer please bear in mind the

welfare of the fish.

On hot days the water, particularly in shallow areas, can quickly become de-oxygenated and cause stress and harm to

fish kept in keepnets . Ensure that if you use a keepnet, it is of a sensibly large size and that it is pegged out correctly .

The old style (knotted mesh) keepnets are not to be used as these have been found to inflict harm to the fish.

Keep fish in a net for a minimum amount of time and be careful how you return them to the water. Any good tackle shop

will be able to advise you on "carp friendly nets" which have a soft mesh.

Litter.

There have been several incidents of litter on and around Society waters reported to the committee from various landowners/landlords .

Whilst in some cases this is not always down to anglers we would ask anglers to ensure that on leaving their swim , all litter is removed .

Any incidents of fly tipping should be reported to a committee member for action.

Sportsman Cup

A new cup is to be awarded but with a difference. It is the Sportsman's Cup and is awarded to the angler who gets the most

nominations by club members. So if you would like to nominate somebody for this award whether it is someone who regularly

helps junior or new anglers, or who you consider to be a good sport email your proposal. Don`t forget to include your name,

membership number and address along with the name of your nominated angler and a brief reason why the angler deserves the

award.

Bird Flu

We are all aware of the imposing threat of bird flu and the strong possibility of it eventually appearing in the UK. As anglers, we are often amongst the first to notice when anything is wrong in waterside environments. Although not wishing to instigate a panic situation, it would be wise to observe a few basic precautions. Any untoward occurrences of dead wild fowl should be reported immediately and should not be touched. As bird flu is believed to spread via, amongst other means, droppings, any contact should be avoided.  Any dead bird should be reported to the Defra reporting hotline on 08459 335577 and to a committee member. Please try to provide as much information about what you have seen as possible.
